Good question! For starters, the annual cost of a full-time senior-level chemist now exceeds $100,000, plus benefits (and good luck finding one available). In addition to that, you'll need lab technicians and a lab with infrastructure and equipment to be able to manage developments effectively. Aside from that, you may not always have enough work to keep them busy at all times, so you're stuck paying for time you aren't able to utilize.
With Formulary's monthly plan, you can pause and resume your subscription as often as you need to ensure you're only paying for product development when you have products you plan to launch.
Is there a limit to how many development requests I can have?
Once subscribed, you can add as many formula development requests to your queue as you'd like, and they will be delivered one by one. If you'd like to run multiple developments concurrently, you can upgrade your plan.
How long do projects take to complete?
On average, most requests are completed in just two days or less. However, more complex requests can take longer.
After submitting a product brief via the Formulary platform, you will receive the first batch of physical prototype samples in ~3 weeks. After you receive the first samples, you may submit feedback in the platform. If needed, we will modify the formula and send revised samples until you are 100% satisfied with the formula. It typically takes two weeks in between each revision for you to get new samples.
How does the pause feature work?
Billing cycles are based around a 31 day period. You may pause your subscription at any time. Any active development projects that have not been completed will be paused until you re-activate your plan. If you have formulas in stability testing, they will remain in stability testing until they pass or fail for the requested term length. If partial documentation for said formulas have already been delivered, you will receive the stability testing data upon completion.
How do I begin a formulation project?
Once you have signed up, you will be given access to the Formulary lab platform, which will allow you to submit briefs to our lab. After you submit a brief, our lab will accept it or request clarification within 24 hours. Once accepted, we will jump on a kickoff call to go over your project details. After the kickoff call, you can expect to receive prototype samples within 3 weeks.
You may submit as many briefs as you'd like, however you will only be able to have as many active projects as outlined in your plan. You may pause any active development and replace them with a new product development project at any time. Any paused development may also be resumed upon request.
Are your formulas high quality?
Yes. At Formulary, we believe that each formula developed should solve a problem. Efficacy, safety and cost are the three driving properties behind each formula we create. All of our formulas are developed by leading chemists to rigorous international standards and are GUARANTEED to meet your quality standards. After initial development, each formula undergoes multiple rounds of testing to ensure its safe, stable, and compliant. Don’t believe us? We’ll send you samples of any formula before you buy.
If Formulary develops my product, do I get full ownership of the formula?
Yes. Whether you purchase one of our unique shelf-ready formulas or develop a custom formula, you will own the formula and be able to take it to any manufacturer to get your product made.
What does each formula come with?
For each formula, you will receive a quantitative formulation, blending procedure, and an ingredient list with detailed supplier information. COAs, MSDS, microbiology challenge testing, stability testing data, and any additional compliance and regulatory documentation can be provided upon request.
How long does it take to develop a custom formula?
For most products, the product development process takes between 4-12 weeks to complete. Depending on the complexity of the formula, this can vary.
Do you send formula samples?
Yes. For all custom development projects, after a kickoff call and upon receipt of your deposit, product development will begin and you will receive the first sample for approval within 3-4 weeks. You will receive up to three rounds of samples and two revisions for free.
For any of our stable, shelf-ready formulas, you can request a sample from your customer dashboard. We charge a small fee to cover shipping and ingredient costs.
What do I do if I don't like my formula?
That is fine! You may continue to request revisions until you are happy with your formula.
Is stability testing included?
Stability testing data is included for free with in any of our catalog products.
For custom formulation projects, stability testing can be provided at an additional cost. The price and lead times vary based on product type and product claims.
